THE letter ‘h’ is often removed from the end of Hungarian names.

Hoyland’s Edit Simonics is an example of that but in this case it’s Edit by name and edit by nature.

Though that does not really give full credit to what she has achieved.

In just four years she, alongside willing helper, husband Attila, have utterly reconstructed their back garden.

It gives you the ‘wow’ factor as soon as you walk in and their little dog Cuki (Hungarian for cute) is keen to grab some of the attention off the plants.

It is no real surprise that Edit works in an artistic capacity, making stained glass art and deco and in photography.

She has certainly applied colour, structure and beauty to the garden, which winds around to the bottom where open fields add another great backdrop.

There are several beds with an unusual mix of plants.

She is more than happy to let foxgloves self seed but there is a taste of the tropics too and wildlife is well-catered for. Her dad was always insistent on growing vegetables so Edit had a yearning to grow flowers from being small.

This garden has given her the opportunity to fully indulge herself.

She said: “I always wanted my own garden in my own style and my dream has come true.

“Previously I was gardening in pots. I had 200 pots because we were renting.

“It was a blank canvas with a beautiful view. After the first year, most of the beds were done. The first year was the hardest.”

Is there a theme?

“I love tropical plants and the look. So I had a middle area with palm trees, cannas, yukkas and ginger.

“But I also love the typical English style too. It’s eclectic.

“Every year I try something new. I don’t want a big veg garden but I love fruits so I grow them.

“It’s self-expression, my projection, a safe place where I can be myself without expectations and anxiety and it’s a place where I learn a lot but also experience a lot of success.”

There are several places to sit around the garden. Each change the view and perception of the garden.

“I am a sun lover, I might not have chosen the best country for that,” laughs Edit.

“But I have found various spaces to find the best places to catch the sun.

“At every single part of the day, there is an area to sit with full sun.”
