Barnsley are working on the ‘teething problems’ present in their 1-1 friendly draw at sixth tier Worksop Town on Saturday which was a ‘good exercise’.
Goalkeeper Murphy Cooper lost the ball for the hosts’ goal then Davis Keillor-Dunn levelled on the Astroturf pitch.
On Worksop’s goal, coach Tom Harban said: “We’re asking the lads to find little pockets of space. It’s a different surface to what we’re used to. It was sticky and difficult at times. We’re asking them to try things and this is the time it can fail.
“We’ll get the teething problems out of the way and hopefully, by the start of the season, they are really fluid in what we are wanting them to do.”
Defender Josh Earl added: “It’s an Astroturf pitch and it’s dry. We’re trying new things. I told him (Cooper) not to worry about it at all. It happens and we just crack on.”
On the game in general, Harban said: “It was another good exercise for the lads.
“They have had a tough week and they are being pushed hard in terms of the physical demands and what we’re asking of them. We’re asking them to get minutes in and get a feel for playing again.
“We got a little bit longer into some of them.
“Overall we’re pleased but we always want to win.”
Keillor-Dunn made it two goals in as many goals this summer. Harban said: “Davo looks after himself. He always works his socks off. He only played the last 35 minutes but you can see the quality he’s got and his enthusiasm to get in good areas and to score goals which he always will do.”
