A BARNSLEY charity described as ‘a powerhouse of community spirit, youth development, and volunteer dedication’ has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Barnsley Sea Cadets is entirely volunteer-run with over 50 hours of service donated weekly and the independent charity has not only weathered the storms of the pandemic, cost-of-living crisis, and social challenges but has emerged stronger and more impactful than ever.

The nomination says: “Serving young people aged ten to 18, many from Barnsley’s most deprived areas, the group offers transformative experiences at little or no cost.

“Their programme is vast and exhilarating: sailing, rowing, climbing, mountain biking, football, band, drill, first aid, and more.

“These activities aren’t just fun, they’re life-shaping.

“Cadets gain confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging that stays with them for life.”

Each year, cadets earn nationally recognised qualifications, including BTECs, first aid certifications, and Royal Navy-accredited awards.

“These credentials open doors to well-paying careers and help young people transition into adulthood with pride and purpose. But the learning goes far beyond the classroom: cadets master self-care, cooking, laundry, job applications, and most importantly respect and discipline.

“The heartbeat of this success is chairperson Lorna Smith, who goes above and beyond to champion every cadet, and commanding officer John Daley, whose tireless work ensures no opportunity is missed.

Their leadership is matched by a team of volunteers who fundraise every penny themselves organising events, parades, and outreach with unstoppable energy.”

Recent highlights have seen cadets performing at Armed Forces Day, supporting community ceremonies, and being featured in Drum Corps World Magazine.

They’ve celebrated individual achievements, like cadets winning local awards, and proudly shared moments of teamwork, service and joy. “From buglers playing at remembrance events to the band performing across Yorkshire, their presence is felt far and wide.”

The nomination concluded: “Barnsley Sea Cadets don’t just teach young people how to sail they help them chart a course for life.

“Their impact ripples through families, schools, and the wider community.

“They’re a shining example of what happens when passion meets purpose, and they are more than deserving of the Community Group of the Year award.

“It would be brilliant for them to be recognised.”

Lorna added: “Wow, we are so pleased about this nomination - as a team we work so hard to provide a great experience for those across the borough and this nomination really highlights what we do.”
