TEENAGERS across Barnsley were celebrating yesterday after opening up their GCSE results.

Pupils at Astrea Academy Dearne received the school’s highest results in recent years.

The school implemented a robust programme of additional learning opportunities, including three weekly compulsory sessions, targeted master classes and breakfast booster sessions - all designed to ensure every student was fully prepared.

This commitment has paid off, with many students achieving exceptional results.

Among the top performers was Liam Sanderson who achieved five grade nines, one grade eight, one distinction* and one grade seven.

Victoria Dombrowska, Alesha Burton and Jaya Evans-Duggan also achieved a strong set of results.

Amir Arezoo, associate principal at Astrea Academy Dearne, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students, who have shown exceptional dedication and determination in preparing for their exams.

“These results reflect not only their hard work but also the unwavering support and commitment of our staff.

Pupils at Netherwood Academy also had reason to celebrate.

Among the top performers were Joel Mosley who received eight grade nines and one grade eight.

While Indi Lotay achieved five grade nines and three grade eights.

Principal Jonny Mitchell said: “Well done to our amazing pupils who have put in so much effort into their exams.

“I have led this school since September 2020 and have seen many improvements, including our first ever ‘good’ judgement from Ofsted.

“I am very proud of being part of this transformational journey and have been extremely fortunate to work alongside many hundreds of inspirational pupils over the years.”

It was also an exciting day for pupils at Outwood Academy Carlton.

There were highlights for the academy in maths where ten per cent more pupils achieved at least a grade for compared with last year.

Further highlights for the academy are in English, as 64 per cent received at least a grade five - significantly exceeding the national average.

One of the standout success stories was Filip Kwiecinski, who achieved six grade nines.

Mia Ferguson secured a grade eight in English language and grade nines in English literature and maths.

Jack Green achieved three grade nines, in English language, English literature and history, and a grade eight in maths.

Principal Paul Taylor said: “I am genuinely pleased and proud of the efforts of this cohort of pupils.

“They have worked relentlessly over their GCSE years and they now have excellent qualifications to accompany their outstanding character.

“We are excited about what the future holds for them.”

Staff at Penistone Grammar School said the atmosphere yesterday was one of ‘complete euphoria’.

Over 80 per cent of pupils secured a GCSE ‘pass grade’ in both English and mathematics allowing them to progress to their next stage of their studies, apprenticeships, or the world of work. While more than 35 per cent of all results were a grade seven or above.

Particular congratulations must go to Ellis Cayre who received seven grade nines and three grade eights, Luke Burton who picked up seven grade nines, one grade eight and a grade seven, Scarlett Cooper who achieved seven grade nines and two grade eights, and Abby McDonald who received seven grade nines, one grade eight and two grade sevens.

The school’s SEND outcomes were also overwhelmingly positive.

Principal Paul Crook said: “As principal, it has been a pleasure today to see that so many of our pupils are now able to enter the next of phase of their education, including yet again for the second year, record numbers studying at our Post-16 Centre, secure apprenticeships or move on to their chosen employment.

“That is what really matters in all of this; securing the best life-chances for each one of our young people”.
