A BOLTON-upon-Dearne man has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award after his brave actions during a dog attack were commended by police.
Last July Jon Robinson was inside his home when he heard a man shouting in a nearby park.
He immediately went to help, and as he got closer to the cries for help, he could see that a Japanese Akita was attacking a man and his own dog.
Jon intervened, securing the dog until officers arrived.
The dog, which had escaped its property, had been involved in a further reported incident earlier that day involving two innocent children, leaving them with wounds requiring hospital treatment.
Jon has been nominated in the Community Hero category by local Dearne councillor Deborah Pearson.
She said: “One early morning in July 2024 he heard shouting coming from a nearby park to the rear of his house and quickly went out to investigate.
“Jon found that an unaccompanied Japanese Akita dog was attacking another dog which was out walking with its owner who was shouting for help.
“Without a thought Jon intervened, putting himself at risk, and removed the dog to a safe space his back garden until police arrived.
’South Yorkshire Police seized the dog which had already attacked two other children before making its way to Mansion Park.
“The dog which was attacked had to undergo surgery and has thankfully fully recovered.
“This all happened during the morning school run, and had it not been for Jon’s quick-thinking and fearless response the day could have been so much worse.
“Please accept this as a nomination for Jon Robinson in the Community Hero category of the Proud of Barnsley awards. We are so proud of him.”
In November, Jon was presented with a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation from Barnsley district commander Simon Wanless by Inspector Rebecca Richardson.
At the time, Chief Inspector Emma Cheney said: “We are continuing to see dangerous dogs causing fear and harm in our communities.
“On this morning, this dog had already caused injury to two small children before heading into a nearby park during a time more children were walking to school.
“Jon’s actions ensured that the dog didn’t pose any further risk to our communities, and I commend him for his bravery.”
On hearing of his Proud of Barnsley nomination, Jon added: “It was quite a surprising morning to say the least and it’s absolutely great to be nominated for this award I really appreciate Coun Pearson nominating me.”
