BARNSLEY superstar Molly Cartwright has landed herself a starring role in Hollywood’s largest horror movie franchise - but she’s not even old enough to watch the film in cinemas.

The ten-year-old Penistone actress plays the part of Shannon Smurl in The Conjuring Last Rites which hits silver screens across the globe today.

It is the ninth film in The Conjuring Universe - the highest-grossing horror franchise in history having made a combined £1.6bn against a budget of £155m.

And predictions for this weekend’s box office figures are high - with the film expected to make up to £37m on its opening this weekend.

But as Molly’s only ten, she admitted she didn’t know much about the film before she sent in her audition tape.

She told the Chronicle: “One of my uncles loves it and he was the only person I knew who liked it before I told them I was going to be in it.

“I had no idea what it was but then I searched it and it was massive.

“I thought that it was really, really cool.

“I’ve never seen such a big set and it was such an honour to work with such amazing people.

“I realised how big it was when I went to a screening in London and everyone was double-taking me and saying ‘oh my gosh it’s the girl from the trailer’.

“I kept getting loads of followers on Instagram and had loads of fan pages follow me which was amazing.”

Molly started he acting career just a couple of years ago but is on her way to becoming one of the biggest names for her age in the business.

And she found out the casting crew were interested just minutes after landing in Lanzarote for her summer holiday last year.

Her mum, Katie, added: “It was quite a long process.

“She had her original self-tape which we submitted and then literally 30 minutes after we landed in Lanzarote she got an in-person request which they agreed to do over Zoom and that was with the casting director.

“She then did three in-persons in London where she met the casting team, the director and the other actors that she would potentially work with and she did a chemistry read to see what they would be like on screen together.”

Molly said she was amazed that she landed the part and she practically lived in Watford for three months while filming.

It’s the second horror film that the youngster has worked on in her short acting career - but she’s open to working on other films.

She said: “I did The Scurry which was a really fun film.

“They were so many amazing people like Ella Purnell and Papa Essiedu.

“It’s in production at the moment so hopefully we’ll hear something about that soon.

“I like to do all kinds of different genres.

“I always seem to get picked for horror films but I do get quite far in the other films like action.”

She returned to school on Wednesday for the first time after the summer break - and she admits it’s surreal that people have seen her in the trailer for such a huge film.

Molly added: “When the official teaser trailer came out a few of my friends who weren’t scared watched it to see if I was in it and they were like ‘oh my gosh’.

“I just want to be on set every day.”

Katie said she couldn’t be more proud of her daughter - and she’s glad she’s doing something she really enjoys.

“I’m very proud of her and when she was on set she was just so professional,” she added.

“She’s had some really amazing feedback.

“If she can have a life doing what she enjoys then we’re definitely winning.”

Molly is due to host a meet-and-greet at Cineworld in the town centre from 7pm this evening - but because the film’s rated a ‘15’ she isn’t even allowed to watch it.

She said: “My family’s going to go to the cinema to watch it and me and my grandma are going to stay at home.

“She’s too scared and I’m not old enough to watch it.”
