A LOCAL golfer’s double stroke of genius secured him quite the feat.

Steve Copeland, 62, who lives in Royston, achieved hole-in-ones twice in eight days - having never hit one in 25 years.

Steve got his first hole-in-one on September 23 at Barnsley Golf Club, with the second following on October 2.

Unbelievably, both happened at the same hole.

Steve attributed his achievements to a combination of favourable weather conditions - and pure luck.

He told the Chronicle: “I’ve been very close a lot of times but never had one.

“I was amazed the first time and I couldn’t believe my luck the second time.

“I think there’s a lot of luck involved.

“In dry conditions, if you hit the green, the ball tends to run off.

“With a little bit of rain, it bounced before and then it bounced into the hole.”

Steve used a Titleist Pro V1 ball to achieve the shots, a type used by professional golfers.

Since achieving it, Steve has retired the ball.

He plans to proudly display it alongside the dates of the shots.

When asked about what advice he would give to a golfer hoping to get a hole-in-one, Steve added: “Stick at it and never say never.”
