BARNSLEY Town won 1-0 at Swinton Athletic in Division One of the County Senior League.

The result moved them up to second, two points off top, with two to go up this season.

Danny Taylor scored the only goal to take his tally to 15 in nine games for the season.

The club was set up in 2023 with the aim of climbing the divisions quickly and becoming one of the top non-league clubs in the town.

They gained promotion out of Division Two and are looking to go up from Division One.

Manager Robbie Gainey said: “We beat Swinton who I regard as favourites to win this division.

“It was a tough game for us but we went in knowing we couldn’t lose if we wanted to gain promotion this season.

“The lads had to battle hard for the win.

“It was not a game for the neutral but both teams played some good football and gave everything.

“We are second in the league and in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

“A title or a cup would be a fantastic achievement but, if we gain promotion to the Premier Division, we will have achieved our goal within the first three seasons of being established as a club.

“We have strengthened the squad in the last week with four new signings to help us maintain our promotion push.”

Having played in various venues around Barnsley, Town have been groundsharing this season at Athersley Rec’s Sheerien Park where they have a ten-year lease.

“It’s starting to feel like home.
