A BARNSLEY pensioner’s story of overcoming loneliness has gone viral on social media - and it resulted in him being interviewed on BBC Breakfast last week.
Raymond Horsley’s heartwarming story, shared by Age UK Barnsley, captured national attention after he bravely opened up.
At 96 years old, Raymond was keen to share his story in the hope of reaching others over 50 who may be struggling.
In his interview, Raymond described the challenges he faced during lockdown, often finding himself alone at home, speaking only to his son twice a day over the phone.
Everything changed when he was encouraged to contact Age UK Barnsley, a local independent charity.
“From then, they’ve never let me go,” he said.
The video, posted to TikTok and Facebook, quickly resonated with viewers from across the UK - amassing more than 140,000 views and thousands of supportive comments.
Many people reached out offering help to others like Raymond, moved by his honesty and positivity.
The viral response soon caught the attention of national media. Raymond, thrilled to see his story travel far beyond Barnsley, said he had two dreams - to share his experience with the world and to live to be 100.
Age UK and Age UK Barnsley teamed up to help make the first dream a reality.
He was interviewed by BBC Breakfast and it was shown on TV on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Age UK said: “Shortly after, Raymond attended Age UK Barnsley’s annual Christmas party, where he was welcomed by Santa Claus, sang his favourite song, and enjoyed a festive lunch with his son Gary.
“The event was a joyful celebration of his journey and a heartfelt reminder of how reaching out and staying connected can truly transform lives.
“Raymond has long been a valued friend of Age UK Barnsley, generously sharing his stories with local social groups and inspiring others through his experiences.”
Katie Cherry, a level three content creator apprentice at Barnsley College, was the woman who filmed the initial video.
She said: “It’s lovely speaking to older people like Raymond, hearing their stories, and being there to help them.
“The fact that I can use my content creation and marketing tools to reach so many new people and help people fills me with so much joy.
“I feel like the apprenticeship has really helped me gain that professional side to my work.
“I have created content for my own passions and projects, but I’m now representing an organisation where everything I do has to be inclusive and respectful.
“I’m thriving and learning so much.
“It has really boosted my chances of having an amazing career.”
