KENNETH Hodgson celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday and believes that having a ‘positive mental attitude’ is the key to living to such a great age.
Born and bred in Dodworth, the former HGV driver still lives independently at his home in Hoyland Common.
He’s lived through 21 different Prime Ministers and three British monarchs but is showing no signs of slowing down.
He is a widower of his wife of over 60 years, Betty.
His daughter, Jacqueline Jackson, told the Chronicle: “He’s born and bred in Dodworth but has lived in Hoyland and Hoyland Common.
“When he was 14 he went to work at the pit but his main job was a HGV driver.
“He enjoyed it out on the road.
“He’s still got a really good sense of humour and he’s independent.
“He’s still got that ‘get up and go’ spirit.
“That’s his secret - having a positive mental attitude.
“It’s porridge every morning and some whisky on a night.”
Kenneth celebrated his birthday on Tuesday but the ‘main event’ is at the Boatman’s Rest on Sunday.
He has two children, five grandsons, two great-grandsons and is expecting another great-grandchild in the coming weeks.
