A TEENAGER has helped the England team to net a bronze medal in the Junior Fishing World Championships.
Last weekend, Adam Byrom, 15, of Royston Lane, jetted off to Corruche in Portugal with the other five members of the England U16s’ team. Over two days they caught barbel and other small fish, eventually reeling in third prize.
“We weren't expected to do well — there were a lot of good teams,” said Adam. “It’s brilliant!”
Participants were judged individually as well. With catches of 3kg on the first day and 2kg on the second, Adam came 17th out of over 50 teenagers.
This is only the second time that the England U16s have won a medal.
Next year, Adam hopes to join the U17s’ team in the former Czechoslovakia.
“I think more people should get involved with fishing,” said Adam, who is a member of Barnsley Junior Fishing Club. “There were a few girls taking part in the championships — it'd be good to see more girls fishing round here too.”
