NEW employment data shows the number of workers on payroll in Barnsley is down on the same point last year.

Overall, employment in Barnsley remains lower than February 2025, with employers reporting payroll headcount down by 417 to 106,919 workers as of last month.

However, there are signs of returning confidence among employers, with organisations reporting an increase of 32 on payroll over the past month, according to official Office for National Statistics (ONS) statistics.

Compared with other local authorities in Yorkshire and the Humber, Barnsley ranks 12th out of 21, placing it among the weakest performers for employment change.

The trend in Barnsley reflects a mixed employment picture across Yorkshire and the Humber, with some areas reporting improvements while others continue to see pressure on payroll numbers.

Paul Hebden, from pay app Wage Sight, said: “Although employment in Barnsley remains lower than a year ago, recent month-on-month figures suggest some stabilisation in recent months.

“Whether this marks a genuine turning point or a temporary pause in job losses will become clearer over the next few months.

“It remains too early to say whether recent changes mark the start of a sustained shift, or a temporary fluctuation.”
