THE leader of Barnsley Council Sir Steve Houghton paid his respects to the six councillors who will not be seeking re-election in May.

At the local elections later this year, all 63 seats in Barnsley’s 21 wards will be contested.

However six current councillors have decided they will not seek re-election.

Dearne North councillor Abi Moore has served on the council since 2023.

Coun Houghton said: “Abi has only been with us for three years but she’s been a young and enthusiastic member.”

While Coun Steve Hunt began his councillor service in 2019 as a Liberal Democrat member.

The leader said: “He has been a worthy opponent and without question he’s been a first class councillor.

“Coun Hunt is leaving us to go to the dark side - Sheffield.”

Coun Trevor Smith, who has served as a councillor on a number of occasions for different parties, will also step down.

Coun Houghton said: “Trevor has been the representative of the Darfield ward.

“We wish him well.”

Councillor Kath Mitchell and Steve Green who have served on the council for a combined 30 years.

“If you can help keep the taxi drivers happy then that’s an amazing achievement for Coun Green in itself,” the leader added.

“I’m honoured to have been able to him a colleague.

“He’s Barnsley through and through.”

Coun Alice Cave, who represents the Darton West ward, first served as a councillor in 1998.

“There isn’t much that Alice hasn’t done on the council,” he added.

“She’s been a hardworking and determined local councillor.

“I’m losing a great friend.

“She’s been great for the council, for this party and her area.”
