AN ADULT learner at Barnsley College has big plans to create a hair salon designed to support people with autism.

Joy Richardson is studying part-time at the college but her long-term goal is to open her own salon that offers a calm, accessible environment for clients with autism.

It’s a personal journey for Joy as both she and her 13-year-old son have autism.

She knows first-hand he challenges many people face in everyday situations, including getting a haircut.

Joy said: “I understand that having a haircut can be an overstimulating experience, especially for children with autism.

“I want to create a space where people feel comfortable and supported, and where the whole experience is tailored to their needs.

“It was very hard coming back into education after such a long time.

“As an older student, I found the tests quite difficult, especially as I am autistic and dyslexic.
