A PETITION calling for the council to take action on a Lundwood road which has been turned into a ‘perilous speedway’ has been launched - and those behind it say something needs to be done before someone dies.
Those on Abbots Road have claimed they have seen cars smashing the speed limit, with some often travelling around 70mph.
It’s resulted in Lucy Guest, 31, launching a petition calling for more to be done to ensure someone does not get hurt.
She told the Chronicle: “Some people seem to think that Abbots Road is some sort of speedway.
“I’d say that there’s five cars a day that are speeding up and down going over 70 miles an hour.
“I just want some sort of precautions in place to ensure that they aren’t able to keep on speeding.
“The simplest and most effective solution is the installation of speed bumps along Abbots Road to deter reckless driving.
“Other viable options include closing off the top of the road to prevent through traffic or installing permanent speed cameras to catch and penalise offenders.
“All these measures are realistic and achievable, but they need Barnsley Council to approve and implement them.
“I did email the council about it and they said that it’s been noted that the speed doesn’t really exceed 34 miles an hour going down the street.
“But I’ve never seen anyone on the street taking note of what speed people are going.
“So I don’t know where they’re getting that information from.”
Lucy is concerned that should nothing be done, someone could get seriously injured or worse.
She added: “I’ve got a three-year-old, if he gets out on the road and they’re speeding, he hasn’t got a chance of survival if he gets hit by one of those cars.
“I don’t even think an adult would survive it, let alone a kid - and there’s several kids that play on this street.
“My mum also lives on this street and everybody else says the same as well.
“It’s not as if they’re quiet - they’re doing it at all times of night.
“So you’re getting woken up by cars revving their engines speeding up and down the street.
“Our community deserves roads that are safe and secure for everyone
“Despite repeated complaints and concerns raised by residents, Barnsley Council keeps turning a blind eye.
“It’s baffling that they would rather wait for a tragic accident to occur before taking any action.
“Why should someone need to get hurt or killed for them to pull their finger out?
“It’s high time preventive measures were put in place.”
A link to the petition, which has garnered almost 100 signatures since it was launched just two days ago, can be found on the Barnsley Chronicle website.
A Barnsley Council spokesperson said: “We take concerns about road safety seriously.
“Abbots Road has a 30mph speed limit, and recent checks show that most drivers are travelling well below this.
“The average speed is 19mph, with the majority of vehicles driving under 26mph.
“There have also been no recorded injury collisions on Abbots Road in the past five years.
“Based on this information, vehicle speeds are not currently causing an increased safety risk, and the road is not a priority for further action at this time.
“We will continue to keep the situation under review and monitor any changes.”
