ONLY three flags - the Union Jack, St George’s Cross and Barnsley Council’s - will be flown from the town hall.

In previous years, Barnsley Council has celebrated Pride Month by flying the Pride flag from the town hall - but this year that will not happen.

Councillor William Brown, leader of the council, told the Chronicle: “Barnsley Town Hall is the civic heart of our council and our borough, and the flags flown there, alongside the lighting of the building and fountains, reflect our civic pride.

“The town hall is the only council building where flags are flown.

“Going forward, the three flagpoles will see the Union Flag, the St George’s Cross, and the Barnsley Council flags fly year-round.

“This change is grounded on the principle of political neutrality in public spaces owned by the whole community.

“The council’s role is to serve all residents equally, without elevating symbols of any particular group campaign or identity above others.

“National and local flags represent the shared citizenship and common identity that unites everyone who works and lives in Barnsley.”
