The man who scored the winner for Sheffield Wednesday at Oakwell on Saturday admitted afterwards that he almost signed for Barnsley this season but chose to stay with the Owls.

Chris O’Grady played under Keith Hill at Rochdale and the Reds manager attempted to bring him to Barnsley earlier in the season. Wednesday were willing to let him go, but the striker decided to stay put.

O’Grady told the Chronicle: “There was the option to go there (to Barnsley) at times this season and it came quite close to happening. It was up to me whether I wanted to go there or not but I thought about the Wednesday fans and I feel I have got unfinished business there. I’ve earned the right to be at Wednesday. It’s a massive club and it means a lot to me.

“It wouldn’t be fair to leave them after getting promoted last year.”

O’Grady says Hill and his coaching staff have helped him become a Championship player and thinks Barnsley should stick with them.

He said: “The management team at Barnsley are the reason why I am playing in the Championship at Sheffield Wednesday. I am very respectful of what they have done for me. It was bittersweet to score against them."
