Labour kept its seat at the Worsbrough by election on Thursday, on a night the BNP secured 18 per cent of the ballot.
Betty Barlow won with 615 votes, Barnsley Independent Group candidate Jillian Aranyi polled 510 and Malcolm Jennings (BNP) 310. The turnout was 22 per cent.
The seat was left vacant when former deputy leader Jimmy Rae died.
