David Flitcroft has been sacked as Barnsley manager after they sank to the bottom of the Championship following a 3-0 home loss to Birmingham City on Saturday.
Flitcroft engineered the 'great escape' last season and racked up 34 points in his first 21 games after taking over as manager. But the Reds, who conceded three goals in the first 38 minutes against the Blues, now have two wins and 11 points from 17 games this term and have conceded 35 goals. They are six points adrift of safety.
Technical coach Martin Scott and strength and conditioning coach Guy Proctor have also parted company with the club.Flitcroft's assistant manager Micky Mellon and under 21s boss Paul Heckingbottom are expected to take the side to Brighton on Tuesday night.
An official statement on the club website added that there would be no more official statements until Wednesday.
Birmingham went ahead on 14 minutes when Jean Yves M'Voto won the ball off Jesse Lingard but passed it straight to Paul Caddis who skipped round David Perkins and Paddy McCourt before firing a superb 25-yard strike into the bottom right corner.
Caddis doubled the lead on 22 minutes from the penalty spot after Jean Yves M'Voto was adjudged to have brought down Nikola Zigic who then made it 3-0 with a cheeky finish following a dreadful Jim O'Brien error.
The match was fairly even after that but Barnsley never came particularly close to scoring. Tomasz Cywka, whose name was chanted from the terraces in the first half, came on and looked lively with a goal ruled out and a powerful free-kick that was tipped wide by goalkeeper Darren Randolph.
