BARNSLEY’S Youth Offending Team has been judged as performing well by government inspectors.

Staff were deemed talented and enthusiastic and the working atmosphere was said to supportive and co-operative.

Senior managers were praised for their team work, leadership skills and strategies.

In a report chief inspector of probation Andrew Bridges states: “The inspection of Barnsley YOT showed a service that was performing well in an area characterised by considerable social deprivation.”

However inspectors, who were drawn from a number of departments including probation, social services and education, did earmark a number of areas for improvement.

Among them were access to mental health services, employment, training and education, which was said to be limited.

Mr Bridges added: “We were confident that the board and the operational management team were well positioned to ensure that the recommendations made following the inspection would be properly implemented.”
