PUB closures threaten the end of one of South Yorkshire’s oldest Morris teams. They need a new practice room - preferably a pub with good beer.
Wath Morris was established over 30 years ago but is homeless for the third time in two years with the closure of the Red Lion, Wath-upon-Dearne, its traditional home.
The team had to move to the Cross Keys when it temporarily closed in 2005 and moved back when that one closed for refurbishment, but now the Red Lion has closed.
“The team is in a strong position in terms of membership so it came as something a shock when we found ourselves homeless following the closure of the Lion,” said team secretary (or bagman) Mark Sheridan.
Wath Morris is renowned as far afield as Whitby, Sussex and Scotland, and completed a successful 2006 with Fire Festivals at Wath-upon-Dearne and Dodworth and a Boxing Day tour around the Wentworth area.
