JAILED footballer James Cotterill is appealing against the sentence he was given for breaking an opposition player's jaw.

Defender Cotterill was playing for Barrow AFC in the FA Cup when he punched Bristol Rovers striker Sean Rigg in an off-the-ball incident which was spotted by TV cameras.

Cotterill, 24, of Spring Street, had no previous convictions. He was jailed for four months by Preston crown court last week after he pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

It is thought he became the first footballer in England to be jailed for an on pitch incident.

His appeal will be heard at the High Court.
