THE council is pressing for a share of a one-off £20 million lottery grant to refurbish Wombwell library in its centenary year.

One of the options being considered is a resource centre which would combine a library with more facilities such as a IT suite, training facilities and meeting room.

A council spokesman said yesterday the deadline for applications was March 30 and innovative ideas were needed for the council to be in with a chance.

He added: "First and foremost, nothing will happen to Wombwell library without the full involvement of the public and other interested parties."

A meeting of voluntary groups, held at the library on Tuesday to discuss the proposal, was criticised by one of those present.

Maisie Robson felt the meeting had not been advertised - there was not even a poster in the library - and many library users and residents were unaware of what was taking place.
