MORE than 630 'troubled families' across Barnsley have been supported by the council, which is on track to meet the government target by the end of this month.

The figure amounts to 97 per cent of the target set by the Department for Communities and Local Government, and is set to reach 100 per cent.

The Troubled Families Programme is where the council is paid up to £4,000 on a payment-by-result basis for turning around the hardest to help families.

These include people who have been involved in youth crime and antisocial behaviour, children who are regularly excluded from school, have an adult on out-of-work benefits and those who cost the public sector large sums in responding to their problems.

Coun Tim Cheetham, council spokesman for people, said: "This is a great example of working with partners to offer our families targeted early intervention and prevention support to improve their life chances."
