ONE of Barnsley's last working coal miners has joined with colleagues at the doomed Kellingley Colliery in urging the NUM to help them financially.

More than 200 men who work at Britain's last remaining deep mine colliery have signed a petition asking the NUM to top up their redundancy payments which have been slashed when compared to previous packages.

They say the petition was handed in at NUM headquarters in Huddersfield Road back in July. But so far they have not received a response from the union either verbally or in writing and the colliery is due to close in December.

Alex Mathewson, 61, from Pogmoor Road, Barnsley, said he and his colleagues feel badly let down.

The Chronicle called the NUM and left message for both the secretary Chris Kitchen and Yorkshire area rep Chris Skidmore. When we eventually managed to speak to Mr Skidmore he told us the NUM would not be making a comment on the matter.
