THOSE visiting friends and family in Barnsley Hospital are being asked to help reduce the spread of infections by using alcohol hand gel.

People are being encouraged to delay their visits if they are suffering from a severe cold, sickness or diarrhoea.

Visitors are also asked not to sit on patients' beds to prevent the spread of infection.

Denise Gibson, assistant director of infection prevention and control, said: "Christmas is always a busy time for us and with the increase in common winter illnesses, it is important that visitors follow these simple steps to help us protect patients."
