Jack Butterley came off the bench to score six and send Barnsley College through to the quarter-finals with an 8-2 win over Wath Comprehensive School in the Schools’ County Cup.
Barnsley, who are managed by former Doncaster Rovers and Oldham Athletic boss Dave Penney, raced into a 5-0 lead before the break on Wednesday with Butterley netting four after Denham Saxton scored the opener.
Wath got two goals back in the second half with Aidan Oakley scoring a cracker from 25 yards before Sam Thomas' volley. But a header and a penalty from Butterley made sure he had half a dozen before Connor Campbell rounded off the scoring with a solo strike. The College's pitch was unplayable so the game was instead played on Oakwell's 3G pitch.
Penney said: "Jack came a little bit late today so it was my decision to make him a sub but he's a goal-scorer and won the game for us. I was pleased with the performance but thought we were a little bit sloppy at times. We'll take an 8-2 win any day.
"We'll have to wait and see who we get next but we would like to use the Oakwell facilities again. It was pleasing to borrow them off Barnsley Football Club. We've got a good partnership with them.
"With the rain we've had it's made a few surfaces unplayable but it was great to use the 3G pitch. The lads really enjoyed playing there. In the first half they really went at it and got the goals. In the second half they sat back a little bit thinking the job was done. Wath got a couple of goals and fair play to them. We then had to change gear again."
