AN INQUEST on Barnsley man will be held again after the original verdict was quashed under the same powers used to overturn the Hillsborough disaster inquests.
Keith Whiteley, 64, died in Barnsley Hospital on April 1 last year from a rupture to his oesophagus (food pipe) - the cause of which is still not known.
Mystery surrounds the events leading up to his death due to the absence of a witness - a care worker who Barnsley Hospital was unable to find in time for the original inquest. But he has now been found and will be summonsed to appear before the new inquest.
It is the first time South Yorkshire coroner Chris Dorries has applied to the High Court to have one of his own inquest verdicts quashed.
On Wednesday he told a pre-inquest review that the ‘unique set of circumstances’ had come about in part as a result of an article published by the Barnsley Chronicle immediately after the original inquest last year.
