AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the death of a four-month-old girl amid fears of a medication mix-up.

Abbie Winfield Jones had been in a critical condition for several weeks and died in Sheffield children’s hospital on Saturday evening.

She had initially been admitted to Barnsley Hospital but shortly afterwards was referred to Sheffield early last month.

Barnsley Primary Care Trust has confirmed it is investigating the events that led to Abbie’s admission to hospital and senior detectives were yesterday deciding whether they need to look into the circumstances which led to the death.

A post mortem is still to be carried out but the coroner is investigating and an inquest is expected to be opened soon.

The Chronicle has learned that Abbie was born with Down’s Syndrome and had other health problems. Her devastated family said they had lost an angel.

Mum, Maxine Winfield, of Kingwell Crescent, Ward Green, said: “My daughter was an angel. We are absolutely devastated, I don’t think it has sunk in yet.”

She said she could not make any other comment.

A spokesman for the PCT, which deals with all medical provision in Barnsley outside the hospital, said: “Barnsley PCT, in association with other agencies, has started an investigation into what happened before Abbie went in to hospital.”
