A YOUNG kart racing champion has signed a contract with the McLaren Mercedes racing team which he hopes will lead him to glory as a Formula One racing driver.

Oliver Rowland, 14, is the second young driver to be signed onto the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz Young Driver Support Programme while still in karting. The first was current Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton.

Oliver, of Gledhill Avenue, Cubley, is thrilled by the opportunity he has been given.

He said: “I hope to go through the ranks and become a Formula One world champion. I'm on the same programme as Lewis Hamilton so hopefully if I follow in his footsteps and do the right things I can achieve it.”

He started so young — with his first quad bike aged just two — he has been into motor sport for longer than he can remember. He was eight when he first won races competitively.
