Heavy rains have caused chaos across Barnsley as the River Dearne burst its banks.

The burst river flooded several roads in Barugh and Darton causing gridlock which spread across the town.

The road at Aldham, Wombwell, was also blocked by flooding and the main road under the Lidget bridge at Hoyland Common was among several others that were blocked.

A farm building on Finkle Street at Wortley is in danger of collapsing after becoming submerged under 8ft of water. Fire crews from all of Barnsley's stations have been out most of the night dealing with the siuation.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning.

Cows in a field off Bence Lane, Darton, were reported to be up to their necks in water and the fire brigade were called out to help.

Schools across Barnsley were closed because of the weather. There are no trains running between Barnsley and Sheffield because of flooding on the lines.
