THE GRIMETHORPE Miners' Welfare is not in danger of closing and is looking for help to modernise its facilities.

Representatives for the welfare met Jeff Ennis MP, council leader Steve Houghton and Brierley Town Council on Friday to see if an agreement could be reached on funding.

Secretary Tony Devoy said: "It was a very positive meeting. People spoke with great affection about the welfare and what it's done in the past and what it wants to do in the future."

But Tony added: "There were no promises of funding at the moment but promises of lots of help and support."

He said there was no threat of closure but the club needed modernising and people needed to work together to see what people wanted within the village and then work towards doing it.

Tony said he would post the minutes of the meeting to the people who attended and would include a letter for them to sign if they wished to help.

He added: "No one organisation is bigger than the community and the most important people in the community are the children and young people."
