PENSIONER Sylvia Johnson's life is being made a misery because of a persistent humming sound around her Monk Bretton home.

She can constantly hear the pulsing low frequency sound which keeps her awake at night and drives her so mad throughout the day she goes out as often as possible.

Mrs Johnson, 74, lives on Fylde Close with husband Frank, 80. She said: "I no longer enjoy my home. I tend to go up to my daughter's house or I go out shopping, or go to Sheffield because I cannot stand it here.

"I cannot sleep, when I put my head on the pillow it's worse."

Mr Johnson says he is affected by the noise as well. He said: "It is like having a truck sitting on my shoulder all day."

The mystery noise started disturbing the Johnsons three years ago and in 2006 council officers installed monitoring equipment. That did pick up some noise but a letter to the Johnsons from the regulatory services department said there was nothing loud enough to be classed as noise nuisance.

However, Mrs Johnson believes this misses the point because she says the persistent low-level noise is as equally as annoying as louder but infrequent blasts of sound.
