PENISTONE'S heritage could be under threat if plans for 'giant' wind turbines are given the go ahead by the council, according to a top university historian.
Professor David Hey, Emeritus Professor of Local and Family History at the University of Sheffield, said the proposed wind farm at Sheephouse Heights is on land so prominent it gave Penistone its name.
Prof Hey said: "Pen is a Celtic word used 2,000 years ago by the Ancient Britons to describe a hill or ridge that dominates the landscape. The ridge where it is proposed to erect giant turbines is quoted in books on the history of the English landscape as a classic example of the use of this ancient term.
"Only people who are totally insensitive to the beauty and history of the English landscape would suggest such a thing. This is a historic landscape that is well worth preserving."
