LISA Sanderson is the lead nurse in Barnsley Hospital’s breast unit and is the embodiment of strength, compassion and inspiration.
A former Macmillan head and neck cancer clinical nurse specialist (CNS), Lisa has not only dedicated her professional life to supporting patients through their cancer journeys, but has herself faced and overcome a rare and challenging breast cancer diagnosis.
In 2015, Lisa discovered a ‘sausage-shaped’ lump in her breast and was diagnosed with neuroendocrine breast cancer an extremely rare form of the disease.
She underwent surgery, followed by intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy, enduring gruelling side effects, hospital admissions, and emotional trauma.
At her lowest, Lisa barely recognised herself in the mirror and struggled to perform basic daily tasks.
Yet, she faced each hurdle with incredible resilience, bolstered by the love of her husband Paul, her family, and the support of friends who even shaved their heads in solidarity.
Rather than retreating from the world after her treatment, Lisa stepped forward to give back.
She became a vocal advocate for people affected by cancer, sharing her personal experience through the ‘Living With and Beyond Cancer Programme’ to help others feel less alone.
She has spoken openly about the isolating nature of the illness and the vital need for emotional and psychological support insights informed by both her lived experience and her professional expertise.
Lisa’s extraordinary journey and tireless advocacy were recognised in 2017 when she was surprised live on national TV by Dr Hilary Jones and celebrated as part of ‘Inspirational Women Week’.
Most recently, Lisa has continued to inspire her colleagues and community by supporting Barnsley Hospital Charity’s new Breast Care Appeal.
Her participation in a fundraising Lego Walk raising £420 is just one example of her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others affected by cancer.
Lisa has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award in the Hospital Hero category.
Jane Mills, charity development manager at Barnsley Hospital Charity, said: “At a recent launch event of the Breast Care Appeal Lisa gave a very personal and moving introduction to external supporters, sharing her own journey to inspire others to give.
“Lisa’s courage, compassion, and dedication make her a true hospital hero.
“She not only survived cancer she is using her experience to empower others, uplift her team, and champion better care for every patient who walks through Barnsley Hospital’s doors.”
