BARNSLEY actress Katherine Kelly said she is ‘proud’ to be the patron of a returning group which will inspire the next generation of stars.
The Lamproom Youth Theatre Ensemble (LYTE) is the oldest group at the theatre having first been launched in 1923 under the guise of ‘Barnsley Children’s Choral Society’.
Last week around 50 young performers attended the first meeting, with their first show set to open next month.
Katherine, who rose to prominence at Becky McDonald in Coronation Street, is a patron of the group.
She attended the first meeting and told the Chronicle: “The ambition of the Lamproom Theatre has always been to provide something for everyone in Barnsley and the region.
“It’s been our ambition since Covid to bring back our youth theatre.
“With thanks to the wonderful support of the AESSEAL Lieutenancy Fund and we have made that a reality.
“Welcome to all our new youth members.
“I’m very proud to be your patron.
“I wish you many happy years at LYTE and beyond.”
