A PRIMARY SCHOOL which is making rapid improvement after being placed in special measures by school inspectors has been nominated as School of the Year.

Doncaster Road Primary School has been put forward for the Proud of Barnsley awards by former governor Ian Newton for going that extra mile on the road to success.

In his nomination, Ian said the school had a brilliant, energised teaching staff and children who were eager to go to school, which was the sign of a happy, healthy learning environment.

But over the last couple of years the school has faced tough times.

The council considered removing the governing body and the headteacher left by mutual agreement.

"It went into special measures but with the arrival of a new leadership team the school is out of special measures and well on its way to been judged 'good' by Ofsted in a remarkable short space of time.

"Now, you only have to walk into the building to realise this is a new sense of order. Behaviour has dramatically improved and the quality of teaching is up. There is a uniformity to each classroom in the sense that things are now colour coded, ordered and even the steps have maths solutions on them."
