A PRESSURE group has launched a rallying call to put a stop to the proposed Mottram bypass before it is too late.

Woodhead Against Increased Traffic is putting pressure on Tony Blair with an e-petition launched this week, which will be sent to Downing Street ahead of the deadline for public consultation on the plans.

The petition reads: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to cancel the A57/A628 Mottram — Tintwistle bypass because it would increase traffic over an area of natural beauty and blight the lives of thousands of residents east and west of the Pennines.”

People have two weeks left to register their objections to the controversial bypass plans with the Highways Agency.

WAIT vice chairman Steve Webber, who set up the internet petition, said that the thousands of objections he is hoping for will make a difference.

“Protest. Object. The more we pump up the profile, the greater our chance of making the Highways Agency sit up and think about the plans,” he said. “I don’t want to get poetic, but the hills, the trees, the sound of birds chirping — that's all going to vanish.” Hi
