TWO Barnsley women are organising a trip to France to help hand out supplies to refugees after being spurred on by ‘vile’ Facebook posts from Barnsley people about the crisis.
‘I’m from Barnsley and I’m not a racist’ is the name of a new Facebook page set up by Laura Stanish, of Darfield, and Ellen Uttley, of Stairfoot, which they are using to promote an appeal for urgent supplies as well as Christmas presents they can take to children in the refugee camps next month.
Laura, 24, said she had been ‘disgusted’ by the comments she read online. They include some comments on a Chronicle article about a bank account to donate money to help Syrian refugees.
“I just could not understand the comments and why so many people seemed to offended by it,” said Laura.
“This was a bank account into which people could choose, of their own free will, to donate to a particular cause. There was just this outpouring of rage about it.”
There are various collection points, and anyone wishing to send items should contact barnsleydonationsforcalais@gmail.com
