A RUNAWAY police car crashed into a telegraph pole and ended up on its roof after an apparent mishap with the handbrake.

Bystanders gathered around the scene of the crash in Carlton Road on Monday lunchtime said they believed the handbrake had been left off allowing the empty car to freewheel down the road.

However the Chronicle overheard a police officer speaking into his radio say: “The handbrake appears to be on at the moment but we will investigate.”

A police spokesman declined to say whether the handbrake had been on or off, saying it would be ‘inappropriate to comment’ because of the ongoing investigation.
