MATTHEW Cooper has secured a place at Penistone Grammar sixth form despite losing most of his last year at school to a battle with cancer.

The 16-year-old spent all of the Christmas term recovering from an operation to remove a tumour from his leg and only returned to class full time in February.

It took away part of his shin and knee and he was still not back to full health when he took his GCSE exams in May.

After picking up his results last Thursday, he found out on Tuesday that he had done well enough to earn a place on two ‘A’ level courses starting later this month - geography and art.
